The 27 Amendments
1. Freedom of Religion, Press, Speech, Assembly, and Petition
Example: You have the right to believe in whatever you want.
2. Right to bear arms
Example: You can own and operate weapons as long as you have a license to do so.
3. Banning the lodging of troops in your home
Example: You can say no to soldiers who ask to stay in your house.
4. No unreasonable searches and seizures
Example: Police or other law enforcement can't enter and search your home without a warrant.
5. Due Process, eminent domain, double jeopardy, and protection from self-incrimination
Example: You do not have to testify against yourself and you can't be tried for the same crime more than once.
6. Right to a jury
Example: If you commit a crime and have a trial, then you have a right to a jury
7. Right to a jury in civil cases
Example: You must have a jury in civil cases.
8. No cruel and unusual punishment
Example: Cruel and unusual punishment is not allowed or legal.
9. Not written down in rights
Example: Some rights may not be written down, but you still have the right to them.
10. Powers not reserved to the government are reserved to the states
Example: Limits the power of the Federal Government.
11. Prevents suits against states
Example: The states must permit the government to sue them if they break the law.
12. Election of the President and Vice President are in the Electoral College
Example: The Electoral College elects the President and Vice President separate from others.
13. Slavery is not permitted
Example: NO SLAVERY!
14. Rights of citizens
Example: Everyone should be treated equally under the law.
15. Right to vote regardless of race, color, or servitude you are
Example: Former slaves have the right to vote.
16. Income tax
Example: The government can tax your income.
17. Popular election of senators
Example: The people elect the senators.
18. Prohibition of alcohol
Example: Alcohol is illegal.
19. Women's right to vote (Women's Suffrage)
Example: Women now have the right to vote.
20. The inauguration and election are closer together
Example: The time between offices is lessened.
21. Repeal prohibition
Example: Alcohol is legal.
22. President can only serve two elected terms
Example: A president can only be elected for two terms of four years each. (A total of eight years)
23. The District of Columbia can vote
Example: Washington DC can now vote.
24. No poll tax
Example: Voting can not be taxed.
25. Presidential Succesion
Example: If the president is unable to do his job, then the vice president takes over, and the list continues.
26. Vote at the age of 18
Example: You have the right to vote if you are 18 years of age.
27. Congressional pay- meaning Congress can raise their salaries for the next term
Example: Congress can only increase their pay for the next term, not whenever they want to.
